Many organisations recognise that good coaching can make a positive impact on the way people perform at every level in the workplace. This can add up to a very big positive difference. The GROW model is one of the simplest coaching models to understand and apply. GROW stands for Goal, Reality, Options and Will. However, the acronym powerfully suggests that coaching helps people to literally "grow" so that they are capable of far more after coaching than before!

So what does the GROW model involve? These questions help you coach someone to good effect, no matter what their industry, expertise or starting point:

Goal

  • What would you like to happen that is not happening now?
  • What would you like more of?
  • If you had three wishes to change the situation you are in, what would they be?
  • Is your goal SMART (Specific, Measurable, Ambitious, Realistic, Timed)?

Reality

  • What is happening at the moment?
  • When does this happen? How often does it happen?
  • Who else is relevant and what is their perception?
  • What effect does this have on you and others feeling, thinking and behaviour?
  • What and how great is your concern about it?
  • How much control do you personally have over the outcome? Who else has control over it and how much?
  • What have you tried so far?
  • What is stopping you from doing more? Are there any personal resistance?
  • What would help you to do more?
  • What resources do you have already - skill, time, enthusiasm, money support etc?
  • What other resources will you need? Where will you get them from?
